WHAT WE'VE DONE

Take a look at the timeline of our project and where it all began!

In Fall 2019, we officially created our Project H.O.P.E. initiative. Ranging across three different high schools, the six of us came together in light of a greater purpose: Helping Others Pursue Education.

We met every week, dedicating and committing hours of work to plan out and come up with ideas to put our movement into action. In doing so, we came into contact with schools like The Monarch School and Cristo Rey High School (click on the links to learn more about these schools!) that provide education and resources for underprivileged youth.

Putting our ideas into action, we organized a supply drive at Ocean Air Elementary School for various toiletries and school supplies that The Monarch School & Cristo Rey High School needed.

Taking a look at the bigger picture, we hoped to educate the students at Ocean Air about the realities of homelessness in our city by giving a presentation to each individual class. With this decision to speak on a more personal level to the students, we hoped to instill a paradigm shift about how real and urgent San Diego’s homelessness crisis is, and how they are able to help kids their own age that live in the same city.

Our team spoke to every individual class (28 classes) of the Ocean Air School to kick off our drive. During our presentations, we emphasized the urgency of our mission, promoting The Monarch School and the Cristo Rey Schools in which our drive supplies and donations would be sent to.

To further raise money and recognition, our team hosted two restaurant fundraisers at Chipotle and Rubios. Upon arrival at our Chipotle fundraiser, we were astonished at the amount of support we were able to get from the students at Ocean Air. According to one of the Chipotle employees, it was "one of the biggest fundraisers we've had". We were able to raise over $700 for the Monarch School and Cristo Rey High School just from these fundraisers. Our team is beyond thankful to everyone at Ocean Air and others who came out to support our cause!

Our team, Project H.O.P.E., placed 2nd at the 2020 FPSPI International Conference for Community Problem Solving due to our efforts in helping underprivileged students achieve a better education. We are once again extremely thankful to everyone who supported our efforts and made our visions a reality.

We took a short break over the summer to recoup and think about how to elevate our project and came back together again in July of 2020. Switching from Project H.O.P.E. to Project H.Y.P.E. directed our focus towards youth in our community and we're more motivated than ever to reach out to students in the San Diego area, especially with the pandemic restricting many educational opportunities that were once available. We're excited for our Spark 2021 conference coming up soon and can't wait to add more to "What We've Done" in pursuing our larger purpose.
